What Makes a Relay Event Special?
Many moments create the unique Relay experience. Event details vary by location, but all events have key moments in common:
During the Survivors Lap, all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while cheered on by the other participants who line the track. Relay For Life events also recognize and celebrate caregivers, who give time, love, and support to their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers facing cancer.
The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after dark, so we can remember people we have lost to cancer, honor people who have fought cancer in the past, and support those whose fight continues. Candles are lit inside of personalized bags and are placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer. Learn More »
Fight Back Ceremony
This emotionally powerful ceremony inspires Relay participants to take action. The Fight Back Ceremony symbolizes the emotional commitment each of us can make in the fight against cancer. The action taken represents what we are willing to do for ourselves, for our loved ones, and for our community to fight cancer year-round and to commit to saving lives.
History of Relay For Life
In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern – cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.

Looking for a great movie to watch over the Easter Holy Days? Then you may want to see Heaven is for Real the Movie. Heaven Is for Real is the true story of a four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who experienced heaven during emergency surgery. He talks about looking down to see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn’t know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear.
In heaven, Colton met his miscarried sister whom no one ever had told him about and his great-grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born. He shared impossible-to-know details about each. Colton went on to describe the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how “really big” God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit “shoots down power” from heaven to help us.
Told by the Colton’s father often in Colton’s own words, the disarmingly simple message is that heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and to be ready … there is a coming last battle. ~Ray Publishing Review
The Burpos are the perfect picture of a small-town Americana family: mom and dad, daughter and son. Young Colton and his dad are inseparable until an illness lands Colton in the hospital. Fearing they will lose their son, the parents cry out to God to spare him.
While Colton’s amazing recovery should lead his family back to normalcy, they quickly discover nothing will ever be the same again. With childlike innocence, Colton begins talking about having visited Heaven and his incredible experiences there … including meeting family members he never knew about.
Based on the beloved book, HEAVEN IS FOR REAL tells one family’s story about Heaven and the impact it has on their community … and the world.

Todd Burpo is the pastor of Crossroads Wesleyan Church in Imperial, Nebraska (Population: 2,122), where his sermons are broadcast every Sunday via the local radio station. He is also the chaplain for the Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighter’s Association. Todd graduated from Oklahoma Wesleyan University in 1991 summa cum laude with a BA in Theology. He was ordained in 1994.

“One of my favorite books has been made into a movie and I can’t wait to take my family. HEAVEN IS FOR REAL is coming out the week of Easter. I look so forward to sharing this story with everyone I love. The book and movie is all about hope, strength, and faith.”
Delilah, Radio Host

Kathie Lee Gifford, Television Host
“I read Todd Burpo’s book, Heaven is for Real. It BLESSED me and brought the joy of hope alive to how bright our future in Jesus really is. The movie did a sweet job of bringing that same TRUTH to light that HEAVEN IS REAL!”
