A memorial fund has been set up for the family of Alexander Perez

WS/FC Schools photo of Alexander Perez

A memorial fund has been established for Alexander Perez, the 10-year-old boy who died Monday March 9, 2015 after he was struck by a SUV in southern Winston-Salem.
The Alexander T. Perez Memorial Fund is at Carolina Bank at 275 N. Stratford Road in Winston-Salem.

George Stabolitis, the owner of The Carriage House Restaurant, said he established the fund because many people want to help the Perez family. The proceeds will go toward helping the family pay funeral costs and other expenses, Stabolitis said.

A graveside service for Alexander was held Friday March 13, 2013 at Mount Gur Cemetery in Kernersville.

For more information, call Carolina Bank at (336) 747-1900.

Twin City Kiwanis Club’s Pancake Jamboree Friday, February 6th 2015

For more information click here to visit their website.

Friday, February 6 marks the return of one of my favorite events in the community and one of the best places to get people together over food: the Twin City Kiwanis Club’s Pancake Jamboree! This annual event, which draws hundreds of people, will be held at downtown the Benton Convention Center from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

It’s a great experience for which people have queued up for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The appeal of the Jamboree is that it’s one of the few times you might enjoy a down-home meal, family-style, among friends and co-workers-a rarity in the fast-paced world we live in today. The great thing is, you’ll probably run into people you might not have seen all winter and share a little time together.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for children under 12. Proceeds benefit the Twin City Kiwanis Clubs community projects.

The Homeless Point-in-Time Count needs volunteers on Wednesday, January 28

The Homeless Point-in-Time Count is a one day, unduplicated count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless individuals and families in Forsyth County. The count, coordinated by United Way of Forsyth County and the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Homeless Council, helps determine the extent of homelessness in the community and data will be used to plan services for the homeless throughout the year. Through efforts in the community to reduce homelessness, chronic homelessness is down over 50% and veteran homelessness is down over 72% in the last seven years. In November, Winston-Salem Forsyth County and Guilford County were selected to participate in Zero 2016, a national campaign to end veteran and chronic homelessness. Mayors Joines and Vaughan announced a partnership to end veteran homelessness by the end of 2015.

Volunteers are needed to help out with the identification and counting of people who are sleeping outside on Wednesday, January 28, 2014. Volunteers will count in groups of 4 to 5 throughout the county for two shifts, 9 p.m. – 12 a.m. and 12 a.m. – 4 a.m. Organizers will be assembling bags of necessities to hand out to homeless men and women and are seeking donations of winter hats, mittens, scarves, gloves, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, small bottles of lotion, chapstick (lip balm), canned foods with pop-tops or pre-packaged food, sunscreen and bottled water.

Volunteers may register by visiting or by calling 336-721-9378. Donations may be delivered to the Bethesda Center.
