Dixie Classic Fair History and Facts
The scrambler ride at the Dixie Classic Fair, 1960.
The Dixie Classic Fair Winston Salem is generally held at the beginning of October. It is a ten-day event. The Dixie Classic Fair is an annual fair held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The fair takes place every autumn on the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds (formerly known as the Forsyth County Fairgrounds), which is part of the Winston-Salem Entertainment-Sports Complex; the grounds are located adjacent to the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. 371,219 attended the 2007 Dixie Classic Fair, which was a new attendance record. This attendance record elevated the Dixie Classic Fair to the 50th largest attended Fair in North America.

The fair began in the former town of Salem as a grain exposition in 1882 (2007 was the 125th anniversary). In 1897, the Piedmont Tobacco Fair was started and shortly thereafter the two events merged to form the Winston-Salem Fair. The fair moved to its current fairgrounds in 1952 and changed its name to the “Dixie Classic Fair for Northwest North Carolina” in 1956. Today, the event is most commonly known as just the Dixie Classic Fair.
There is a wide variety of entertainment and activities that are suitable for the entire family. Rides, games, livestock competitions, wine tasting, and arts and crafts workshops are just a few of the reasons why Dixie Fair 2014 will be better than ever. ~Scott Ray
2014 Dixie Classic Fair Schedule
Every day is a brand new day at the fair. A Tradition of Food, Competition and Fun!
In 1911, crowds gathered for the first Winston-Salem Air Show and gazed in awe as Lincoln Beachey, then the world’s greatest exhibition flyer, who commanded the sky with his signature “loop the loop” act in a rickety wood and canvas biplane. A century later, the Winston-Salem Air Show continues to celebrate more than 100 years of taking to the skies and spectators will be no less amazed at the dazzling lineup of military and civilian aircraft performing feats of aerial daring that even Beachey couldn’t have imagined.
The 2014 air show takes place September 13-14 and provided visitors a great opportunity to get acquainted with the Triad’s rich aviation history at Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem. Gates Open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day rain or shine.
The Winston-Salem Air Show returns to Smith Reynolds Airport on September 13-14, 2014! The Air Show is the best affordable family entertainment in the Triad area of North Carolina. Save 40% with advance tickets online now or at select area Harris Teeter store locations starting August 27th

Winston-Salem Greek Festival 2014 2014 Festival Dates: May 16, 17, 18 Friday and Saturday 10 to 10 Sunday 11 to 8
On May 16, 17 and 18, the Greek community is inviting everyone to its Annual Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Church. 435 Keating Drive, off of Country Club Road & Silas Creek Parkway. Here’s what’s on tap for the weekend: plenty of Greek dancing, informative tours of the beautiful church, and shopping at the Agora (Market Place), where you can purchase arts, crafts and other goodies. Speaking of goodies, the most important part of the festival in my opinion, is the F-O-O-D. And lots of it! Think: Gyros, moussaka, pastitsio, souvlaki and my favorite, spanakopita!
The festival hours on Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is $1.00. You can also call in take-out orders from the event. Telephone: 765-FOOD (3663).
