Dixie Classic Farmers Market to hold corn-shucking and salsa-recipe contests

(Winston-Salem Journal) — The Dixie Classic Farmers Market at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds will hold a corn-shucking contest and a salsa-recipe contest.

The corn-shucking contest, held in conjunction with Samaritan Ministries, will be at 9 a.m. Saturday. It is open to adults and kids 12 and under.

A cash prize will be awarded to the winning adult and child. Corn shucked will be donated to the soup kitchen at Samaritan Ministries.

The deadline to enter is noon Friday.

The salsa-recipe contest will begin at 9 a.m. Aug. 3. Winners will be announced at 10 a.m.

Winners will receive cash prizes, including $100 for first place, and the Winston-Salem Journal will publish the winning recipes.

The deadline for entries is July 31.

Casting Call for local Texas Pete commercial: No acting experience is necessary

“Real North Carolinians” needed.  No prior acting experience is necessary.
A Texas Pete hot sauce commercial will be filmed in Winston-Salem and organizers said they’re looking for actors. An open casting call is set for this Thursday at Altair Casting (703 Coliseum Plaza Court) in Winston-Salem.
A large number of people are needed, including two kids, between 8 and 15 years old, who look like siblings. They must be active and be able to ride a bicycle.  Interested?  Children should come between 12 and 3 p.m.   Adults from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.    Participants are asked to bring a current photo and should be available for callbacks on Saturday with the director.  Participants will be paid for their roles. Casting officials said the commercial is planned to be shot the week of July 22 and participants must be available to work 12-hour days.

Summer Music Series started Friday June 7.

The Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership’s Summer Music Series kicks off this Friday with Downtown Jazz. So, here’s the scoop:

Downtown Jazz debuts its six-date schedule Friday evening June 7 from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Concerts will also be held on June 21, July 12 and 26, August 9 and 23 in Corpening Plaza. Admission is free.

Summer On Trade will begin in two weeks on Saturday, June 22 from 7 p.m.-10 p.m., and runs every Saturday at Sixth and Trade Streets through September 7. Admission is free.
