Find Your Spring and Summer Festival

festival-logo

The spring and summer festival season in the Piedmont Triad and Western North Carolina are here. Nearly every weekend between now until September will see a street festival of some kind, somewhere. Most of them are within a day’s drive of Winston-Salem, here in North Carolina, and in Virginia.

There is an informative Web site that is dedicated to the festivals in North Carolina http://festivalsandevents.com/festival.php?state=NC and have a ball plowing through it, finding all the festivals you might want to explore. Follow the other links to festivals just across the border in Virginia. All are worth a quick day trip in this warm season

The 9th Annual Smitty’s Notes Best of Winston-Salem Contest

smittysnotes

It’s your turn to vote on your Winston-Salem favorites in the 9th Annual Smitty’s Notes “Best of Winston-Salem” contest. Our neighbors to the east have their favorites – now it’s time to show off ours this year.

Smitty’s Notes has decided to take a stab again at naming some of the “bests” in our fair city. As a Winston-Salem centric e-newsletter with over 15,000 subscribers, we’re asking YOU to tell us your favorite place to eat, play, and hang out. And maybe the results will lead you to check out some new things you haven’t tried based on recommendations from fellow Smittyheads. I know from last year results, it made me do a little exploring.

So, here’s the deal.

– Take time. Fill out the survey (Trust me. This could have been longer). Comments supporting your choices are encouraged.

– You may go back and work or change your choices anytime BEFORE you submit your answers.

– New categories have been added and some removed reflecting our changing community interest.

– The contest will run until midnight June 30, 2015. Results will be announced after July 6, 2015 in the Smitty’s Notes e-newsletter and on SmittysNotes.com which will also feature a special section on all the good things you recommended.

Submissions may be anonymous; however, if you wish to share your contact information, Smitty’s Notes will randomly select one person to receive a $50 Visa gift card

I’ve learned you folks need a little incentive!

I need your help to get a good sampling. Forward this e-mail to all your friends, colleagues and crew. Bombard your address book. However, sitting at a computer repeatedly submitting to category (ballot stuffing) is strongly NOT encouraged.

I look forward to reading and sharing your choices. Each year’s results are entertaining. The comments always give me a good chuckle 😉 Thanks for your interest and support!

So, what is Winston-Salem’s Best…

Spread the word!

A memorial fund has been set up for the family of Alexander Perez

A memorial fund has been established for Alexander Perez, the 10-year-old boy who died Monday March 9, 2015 after he was struck by a SUV in southern Winston-Salem.
The Alexander T. Perez Memorial Fund is at Carolina Bank at 275 N. Stratford Road in Winston-Salem.

George Stabolitis, the owner of The Carriage House Restaurant, said he established the fund because many people want to help the Perez family. The proceeds will go toward helping the family pay funeral costs and other expenses, Stabolitis said.

A graveside service for Alexander was held Friday March 13, 2013 at Mount Gur Cemetery in Kernersville.

For more information, call Carolina Bank at (336) 747-1900.

Come join us for the 15th Annual Susan G. Komen Northwest NC Race for the Cure® at our new location and date! The Susan G. Komen Northwest NC Race for the Cure® will be held in Downtown Winston-Salem with pre- and post-Race celebrations at the BB&T Ballpark.

For the past 14 years, Susan G. Komen® Northwest NC has been hosting the annual Susan G. Komen® Race for the Cure.  For 14 years it was held in the same place and in the same month, but this is a big year.  This will be year 15 of our iconic Race, and we’ve got some very exciting news.

15thannualsgkomen

This year, the Susan G. Komen® Northwest NC Race will be held on Sept. 27, 2014, at the BB&T Ball Park in Winston-Salem.  The change was spurred by the hope of kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month on the right foot.

Race is more than just a 5k walk and run…it’s a celebration of breast cancer survivors, fighters, co-survivors, pre-vivors (BRCA positive men and women) and dedicated advocators who want to see the world rid of breast cancer.  However, registering for the Race is only half the battle.  Komen Northwest NC takes donations throughout the year and from Race and uses them for a variety of reasons, such as community grants and to help provide underprivileged women receive education materials, proper treatment and preventative care.

For more information and to register for the Race, go to our website: www.komennorthwestnc.org/

So what does this mean for you?  It means you need to fundraise.

Fundraising is so important and every penny helps.  Don’t be afraid to go door-to-door or to host dinner party for friends and family – you can have each person pay for a plate of food, and then take a portion of that for a donation. For more unique and creative fundraising ideas, visit 101Fundraising Ideas.

When you decide to register for Race, remember that this is more than just a celebration of the strong and courageous individuals who have overcome breast cancer.  It’s more than just a remembrance of those who bravely fought cancer but lost their battle.  Race is a beacon of hope that radiates throughout the nation that boldly states, “We envision a world without breast cancer, and we won’t stop until we can make it happen.”

Currently, Race registration is $25 for adult non-timed and $30 for adult timed racers.  Starting April 1, registration prices go up to $30-$35.  To register for Race or to activate a team from last year, click here.

The Winston-Salem Light Project – March 21 through April 20
WSLP2010
The Winston-Salem Light Project’s 2014 will be every night starting March 21-April 20. The installation seeks to reveal the hidden movement that defines our world. Spanning a half-mile along the Winston-Salem Strollway, the interactive installation transforms the path into a series of arches that mirror the movement of pedestrians and bikers in and out of the city center. The Light Project has moved from fall to spring and to south of downtown.
