Last tax-free weekend to run through Sunday at midnight

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — This weekend is the last tax-free holiday in North Carolina. The popular weekend runs Friday through Sunday at midnight in which you can buy school supplies, clothes and computers tax-free.

“I wanted to come inside and play with the electronics to see which one I like the most,” said Winston-Salem State senior Angela Butler.  She started checking out computers at Best Buy Thursday evening. “Trying to decide if I want to get a new laptop or if I want a new MacBook.”

View: list of eligible and ineligible items.

North Carolina lawmakers nixed future tax-free weekend as part of new tax reform Gov. Pat McCrory signed into law last month. Supporters of the reform say everyone’s state income taxes will be reduced, putting more money in peoples’ pockets day-to-day.

Last year the tax-free weekend cost the state $13.3 million in lost tax revenue.

“We are pricing out some things and planning our attack,” said mother of two Erin Swift at Target on Hanes Mall Boulevard.  “The savings add up when you are buying backpacks, notebooks, markers, pens, pencils, clothes, shoes and sports equipment.”

Many retailers say the loss of a tax-free weekend will hurt them as shoppers could turn to buying online or across the border in states like South Carolina where a tax-free weekend will continue.

Here’s a list of eligible and ineligible items.
